Every December, hundreds of displaced residents return to Picher, Oklahoma, once known as "the most toxic town in America," for a Christmas parade through its empty streets. After decades of mining poisoned the land and its children, and a deadly tornado struck in 2008, the federal government forced Picher’s last families to leave. But loyal Picherites still consider it home.

For over a decade, former resident Paula Suman has brought her scattered neighbors to the ghost town each December for a single day of celebration and community. PARADE IN PICHER is a story of displacement, environmental injustice and the enduring power of community. It’s also a cautionary tale about what happens when industry promises progress but leaves lasting damage behind.
